NPA Invites FDA to Brief Industry on CBD Regulatory Process on June 23

FDA claims “substantial progress” on CBD regulations, offers few details

WASHINGTON – The Natural Products Association (NPA) today invited the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to join a webinar on June 23, 2020 and elaborate on the “substantial progress” the Agency has made on developing regulatory guidance for CBD products.  On June 8, a spokesperson for the FDA told Food Navigator-USA, an industry trade publication covering issues related to food and natural products, that the Agency is “working toward a goal of providing additional guidance and have made substantial progress” on regulations for CBD.  The Agency offered no specific details on what “progress” it has made.

For the past three years, NPA has been asking the FDA to set a safe level of daily consumption for CBD products.  Last year, the U.S. House of Representatives passed a provision that would require that provides resources so the FDA can perform a Health Hazard Evaluation (HHE) and set a safe level of CBD for consumers to use each day. The process would follow the same precedent as red yeast rice, which allows a natural product to contain a level of a drug ingredient that the FDA has determined to be safe.

“If the FDA has made real progress on a plan to regulate CBD, then we want to see it,” said Daniel Fabricant, Ph.D., President and CEO of NPA.  “Consumers who stand to benefit from this new industry also deserve to know that the products they use are safe.  We look forward to hearing the FDA’s plan to bring certainty and transparency to the growing CBD marketplace.”

The webinar will take place on June 23, 2020 at 10:00 AM EST and feature some of the leading voices from the CBD industry.  The webinar will be attended by both NPA members and non-members.  The discussion will be led by Dr. Daniel Fabricant, Ph.D., and panelists will include:

  • Patrick O’Mahony: Chief Specialist Food Science & Technology from Food Safety Authority of Ireland
  • Erin Williams, Senior Policy Analyst, Industrial Hemp Program Manager; Office of Policy, Planning and Research; Virginia Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services;
  • Lisa Ramsey, M.S., Food Safety Regional Manager, Southwest; Virginia Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services
  • Darryl Sullivan: Chief Science Officer and Director of Regulatory Affairs from Eurofins Scientific, Inc.
  • Grace Bandong, M.Sc.: Global Strategy Leader for Contaminants, Eurofins Food Integrity and Innovations

NPA members can join the webinar for $99 and non-members can join for $299.

Members of the media can register with Dr. Sibyl Swift sswift@npanational.org to receive a complimentary press pass.
